Growing up he worked on the family farm. In high school he was on the track and basketball teams, graduating from Parowan High. He joined the Air Force in 1956 where he learned to work on diesel generators. He was stationed at F. E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, WY, Syracuse, NY, Thule Greenland and Libya, separating in 1961. One friend described him as a burnt marshmallow, all crusty on the outside but soft and gooey on the inside. He also collected scrap metal, cars, and enjoyed doing things with his family.
