On which day of the week do the most deaths occur? According to an article by Sara G. Miller for Live Science, more deaths occur on a Saturday than any other day of the week.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Wonder database contains data on all deaths in the U.S. from 1999 to 2014. The numbers reported below represent data collected from this period.

– Deaths from accidents peaked on Saturdays and Sundays. Car crash-related deaths, for example, were higher on Saturdays, followed by Sundays and Fridays.

– Firearm deaths also peaked on the weekends, increasing from between 23,000 and 25,000 total on the different weekdays to more than 31,000 deaths during the Saturdays and Sundays of the study period.

– On a much smaller scale, the greatest number of deaths due to “contact with a venomous plant or animal” (the official term for this cause of death) also occurred on Saturdays. Over the 15-year period, there were a total of 216 reported deaths from a poisonous plant or animal.

Other data in the article shows that heart attacks peak on Mondays, with death from the flu and pneumonia occurring more on Tuesdays.

Tips for Delivering a Eulogy

Delivering a eulogy at a funeral or memorial service is both an honor and a responsibility. Today we’re providing some tips and ideas to consider.

A proper eulogy should:

Honor the deceased
Reflect the deceased’s character and values
Provide comfort and meaning to those in mourning

Eulogies usually consist of:

A brief introduction and your relationship to the deceased
Two or three meaningful stories, traits, or examples
A closing reflection, lesson, or farewell

The length guideline of a eulogy is generally five to seven minutes. Unless instructed otherwise by the family, shorter is usually better.

A eulogy is not a reading of the obituary, nor is it intended to be a full biography. When selecting content, consider the following:

Warmth and gentle humor are acceptable if natural and respectful
Make it personal – describe what the deceased meant to you
Avoid negativity, controversy, or unresolved family dynamics

Losing your composure briefly is human – it is appropriate to have emotions arise.

When writing a eulogy, consider the following tips:

Write the eulogy in full, even if you plan to speak naturally
Practice aloud several times
Bring a physical copy printed in a large font – do not rely solely on memory

When delivering a eulogy, consider the following tips:

Speak slightly slower than normal
Pause between thoughts
Breathe intentionally if emotions surge – silence is acceptable and the audience will wait

Remember that the family and/or the audience is not judging your speaking ability. Instead, they are seeking recognition of the person they loved, validation of their grief, and a moment of shared remembrance.

What is “Re-Grief?”

“Re-grief” is a psychological term that refers to the renewed experience of mourning a loss that occurred in the past and was previously grieved. In other words, re-grief may make you feel as though you are mourning the death of your loved one all over again and reliving the pain of the loss – possibly for the second, third, or fourth time.

Re-grief occurs unexpectedly and long after the original event, making you feel as though the death happened just yesterday. You may cry, feel overwhelming sadness, or feel as though you are moving slowly through a thick, dense fog.

Experiencing re-grief does not mean that you have failed to heal from the original loss. Instead, it showcases the way loss continues to interact with a person’s life as it evolves.

It is important to note that re-grief is a normal and healthy process. It demonstrates that grief is not something to “complete,” but something that is carried, reshaped, and understood over time.

Experts advise people experiencing re-grief to stop and take a few deep breaths. Tune into what you are feeling, then intentionally set those feelings aside for a more appropriate time. When you are able, give yourself the necessary time to grieve. Give in completely to what you feel. Gently remind yourself that your grief is ongoing. There is nothing wrong with you and you are not broken. Tell yourself: “ Grief is an experience, not an event .”

Self-care is of the utmost importance when you are experiencing re-grief, as is identifying triggers. Share with others how you are feeling and ask to modify a situation to make it easier for you. Above all, be gentle with yourself and remember that grief is a process. The painful place that you feel you are in today is not where you will stay forever.

The Science and Art of Embalming

The process of embalming has been around for thousands of years and has been practiced by many ancient cultures, including the Incas of Peru and during the Han Dynasty in China. Most notably, the ancient Egyptians are credited with elevating embalming to its highest form by developing the process of mummification. The Egyptians believed that the preservation of the body in mummy form empowered the soul after death, thus allowing the soul to return to the preserved body.

In our modern culture, embalming is practiced for three reasons: to sanitize the body, to preserve the body, and to present the body. Sanitization eliminates any health hazards to the public. The temporary preservation of the body achieved through the embalming process delays natural decomposition and allows the body to be presented to family and friends for a viewing and/or funeral service.

Modern embalming chemicals contain formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, ethanol, humectants, and other additives to achieve the desired goal of sanitation, preservation, and cosmetic presentation. A skilled embalmer mixes the chemicals correctly in order to achieve a natural appearance of the body. The exact ratio required depends largely upon the condition of the body at the time of death. For example, if edema is present, a humectant would not be added into the mixture. An embalmer’s skill level is derived from their experience, education, and their level of care and attention. As with any profession, there are those who are more qualified than others.

Blue Zones

“Blue Zone” is a nonscientific term given to geographic regions that are home to some of the world’s oldest and healthiest people. The individuals who live in these areas report low rates of chronic disease and long life expectancy.

The term was coined by Dan Buettner, an American author and explorer who studied areas of the world in which people live exceptionally long lives. In the course of conducting their research, Buettner and his colleagues termed these areas “Blue Zones” because they drew blue circles around them on a map.

In his book, “The Blue Zones,” Buettner details five known Blue Zones:

Okinawa, Japan
Sardinia, Italy
Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica
Icaria, Greece
Loma Linda, California, USA

Blue Zone characteristics include:

High life expectancy (many residents live to be over 100 years old)
Low rates of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and cancer
Strong social connections and community support
Plant-based, nutrient-rich diets
Active lifestyles with moderate exercise

Buettner details that genetics probably only account for 20% to 30% of longevity. Environmental influences, including diet and lifestyle, will likely play a huge role in determining your life span.

Buettner found that people who live in Blue Zones eat a diet full of whole plant foods. They tend to follow the 80% rule, which means that they stop eating when they feel 80% full, rather than 100% full. They consume alcohol in moderation, exercise in moderation, and get plenty of sleep.

Living longer, healthier lives is something we all can get behind. Incorporating “Blue Zone” practices into our daily lives may help us do just that!

The Six Needs of Mourning

When we lose someone we love, we enter into the grieving process. Moving through this process takes time and does not end the day of the funeral or memorial service.

Dr. Alan Wolfelt is the Director of the Center for Loss & Life Transition and is a respected author and educator on the topics of grief and healing. He writes that, although everyone grieves differently, there are “six needs of mourning” that everyone should encounter as they move through the grieving process. These six needs are:

Acknowledge the reality of the death
Embrace the pain of the loss
Remember the person who died
Develop a new self-identity
Search for meaning
Receive ongoing support from others

Dr. Wolfelt describes these six needs as steps on a “to-do list” that we should slowly move through over time. He states that completing each step at our own pace will eventually help us transition into a new life – a life without our loved one, but one of meaning and purpose.

The Purpose of a Vault

Why is a vault or outer burial container required by most cemeteries?

An outer burial container is a box specifically designed to enclose the casket in the ground at the cemetery. Its main purpose is to preserve the integrity of the grave and protect the casket.

An outer burial container is known by several different names, including a vault, a grave liner, or a grave box. They are usually constructed from heavy-duty plastic or concrete and are designed to prevent the grave from collapsing from the weight of the earth and the heavy machinery needed to maintain the cemetery.

Vaults have different qualities and features based on the construction and materials used, but there are two main types: non-sealing and sealing.

A basic grave liner (non-sealing) is a concrete box that does not seal. Although a grave liner does meet the minimum requirements of some cemeteries, it offers little in the way of protection and allows water and other common ground elements to penetrate the casket.

A sealing vault is made of heavy-duty plastic or concrete that includes a plastic liner bonded to the inside. This design provides watertight construction and helps maintain the integrity of the grave.

Individual cemeteries have their own preferences and requirements as to whether they allow plastic or concrete, sealing or non-sealing.

Vaults have a wide price range based on the quality and style selected.

The Value of a Funeral

As a licensed funeral director of 25 years, a phrase I often hear repeated is, “Just throw me in a pine box and bury me in the backyard!”

I’ve heard this phrase too many times to count, especially from men. But when we engage in further conversation, I find that what the person really means is “I’m not worth the expense and fuss of a traditional funeral.”

When our loved one dies, they deserve our recognition. Family and friends have the opportunity to gather together, view the deceased, share memories, and proceed together to the cemetery for burial. For many people, these are important elements in a ritual that should not be neglected or disregarded.

There is value in holding a funeral or other type of service and in taking the time to remember and celebrate the unique life of the deceased. In my opinion, we should be careful not to contribute to the degradation of the worth of a funeral in our society.

Funerals do not have to be expensive to be meaningful. Services can be simple or elaborate, religious or secular, traditional or contemporary. Options abound with funerals and memorial services, and we’re here to help you make the right choices for you and your family.

Most Expensive Funerals

Who had the most expensive funeral in modern history? The answer appears to be up for debate, as different sources credit several different people as the victor of this posthumous competition. Top contenders include:

* Michael Jackson – $1 million dollars (2009). Jackson was presented in a polished solid bronze Promethean casket with gold-plated hardware, furnished by the Batesville Casket Company , which cost approximately $45,000.

* Diana, Princess of Wales – $11.8 million dollars (1997). Two thousand people attended the ceremony in Westminster Abbey. In addition, it is estimated that over one billion people watched the event worldwide, making it one of the largest televised events in history.

* Kim Jong Il – $40 million dollars (2011). The funeral committee was comprised of 232 members. The service took place on a freezing day in December and included a three-hour funeral procession.

* Queen Elizabeth II – $204.1 million dollars (2022). An estimated 250,000 members of the public saw the British queen lying in state in London during the mourning period, with many waiting in line in the streets for more than 24 hours.

* Ronald Regan – $400 million dollars (2004). Although the funeral itself was very expensive (including a mahogany casket estimated at $14,000), costs really skyrocketed when former President George W. Bush declared June 11, 2004, a federal day of mourning, thus giving the nation’s federal employees a paid day off and closing the stock market.

The Birthday Effect

The “birthday effect” is a statistical phenomenon in which a person’s likelihood of dying is higher on, or around, their birthday. Even more interesting, a 2012 Swiss study found that you’re statistically 13.8% more likely to die on your actual birthday than any other single day in the year (in adults aged 60 or older).

For example – fitness professional Richard Simmons died on July 13, 2024. His birthday was July 12th.

An additional study in 2015 conducted in the United States found that, on average, the risk of dying on your birthday is 6.7% higher than any other day in the calendar year. Other research shows that mortality peaks close to a person’s birthday – the week before for men and the week after for women.

But why? An article written by Lindsay Dodgson for Business Insider details several possible explanations.

– External causes seem to be at play. Excessive drinking appears to play a role, as people tend to drink more on their birthday, sometimes leading or contributing to accidents. In the United States, for example, there is a high mortality rate for people the day after their 21st birthday, largely due to an increase in alcohol-related accidents after reaching the legal age for drinking.

– Psychological reasons appear to have a great impact. For example, terminally ill patients may set their sights on their birthday as a goal to live for, holding on until they reach another milestone.

– Physiological reasons may contribute. Our bodies run on circadian rhythms which are set to not only a 24-hour cycle, but an annual cycle as well. As such, scientists have suggested that our bodies may trigger stress (and eventually death) around the date we were born.

Whenever your birthday falls on the calendar, we encourage you to be smart and stay safe! Embrace your new age with a positive attitude and healthy habits. After all, in the words of the great Mark Twain, “Do not regret growing older. It is a privilege denied to many.”

Is Black My Only Option?

As a licensed funeral director, I’m often asked, “Do I have to wear black to a funeral?” The answer is, no, black is not the only acceptable color to wear to a funeral or memorial service. There are, however, certain recommendations of etiquette to follow when selecting an outfit.

I came across a wonderful article published by huffpost.com and written by Julia Brucculieri entitled “What Not to Wear to a Funeral, According to Etiquette Experts.” Ms. Brucculieri states, “There is a time and a place for everything, and a funeral service is definitely not the place to test out your flashiest outfits or trendy accessories. You want to look presentable and also be respectful of the deceased and their loved ones. Funerals are a time to remember those we’ve lost, not bring attention to ourselves.”

The article notes that black has traditionally been the color of choice for attending funerals, although various cultures around the world have different customs for funeral services. Etiquette expert Daniel Post Senning states, “You want to honor the spirit of the event. Traditionally, that [meant wearing] things that were darker tones…the idea was that you weren’t really festive. The idea was that you were expressing mourning.” Fellow etiquette expert Diane Gottsman adds, “you don’t have to wear black, but wear something that’s not going to make you stand out and make you look as if you’re celebrating.”

It may seem like common sense, but there are definitely a few items to avoid wearing to a funeral. Senning and Gottsman advise against the following: athletic wear, sneakers, jeans, super short hemlines, and spaghetti straps. Gottsman adds, “You have to show that you made the effort. That’s the bottom line. You have to show that you made some effort to come and show your respect for the deceased and the family members.”

When asked, I personally recommend that dress should be conservative and respectful. Dark and subdued tones are always appropriate, such as navy or gray. Keep accessories minimal and simple. Remember, you are attending a funeral service in honor of the deceased, the life they lived, and the family they left behind.

Fun Facts for the Christmas Season

I came across an online article from Good Housekeeping entitled “32 Interesting Christmas Facts for a Fun Holiday Trivia Night.” Written by Asher Fogle and Lizz Schumer, this article will give you a new perspective on everything from Santa Claus to “Jingle Bells.” Here are a few of my favorites:

– Before Coca-Cola decided to use his image for advertising, Santa looked more spooky than jolly. In 1931, the beverage company hired an illustrator to depict the jolly old man for magazine ads. The image of Santa Claus we associate with today was born.

– The eight tiny reindeer have had lots of names! Rudolph was almost named Rollo or Reginald , and his crew was previously called Flossie, Glossie, Racer, Pacer, Scratcher, Feckless, Ready, Steady, and Fireball.

– “Jingle Bells” was originally a Thanksgiving song. James Lord Pierpont wrote “One Horse Open Sleigh” for his church’s Thanksgiving concert in the mid-19th century. Then, in 1857, the song was re-released under the title we all know and love.

– You better watch out! Here is one not-so-fun fact – it is estimated that 14,700 people visit hospital emergency rooms each November and December from holiday-related decorating accidents, totaling about 240 injuries per day. The most common accidents involve falling, lacerations, and back strains.

– Every year, letters to Santa Claus flood post offices across the world. Cementing their reputation as some of the nicest people ever, some big-hearted Canadian post office workers started writing back. As the program took off, they set up a special postal code for Santa: HOH OHO.

– The majority of Americans celebrate Christmas – roughly 85%. Not all of those who partake in Christmas celebrate the religious aspects of the holiday, but you can bet that come December 25th, most people are opening up presents under the tree.

Power of Attorney: What Happens Upon Death?

Many people assume that whomever had power of attorney during life will continue to have the legal authority to make decisions following death. This assumption is incorrect the majority of the time. A power of attorney is simply a document granting another person permission to act on their behalf during their life. Power of attorney does not remain in force after death and technically dies with the person . In other words, when the individual passes away, the document becomes null and void.

However, a person can, and should, legally document their final wishes in advance with a funeral home. If advance directions are set forth, the funeral home will proceed with the deceased’s wishes. Otherwise, the funeral director is responsible to adhere to a specific next-of-kin hierarchy set forth by Utah State Code.

The hierarchy is as follows:

1.) A person designated in a written instrument (a will or trust). This written instrument must contain specific information and be witnessed by two unrelated individuals. This does not include individuals granted power of attorney, because, as stated above, power of attorney ceases upon death.

2.) The surviving legally recognized spouse.

3.) The sole surviving child, or the majority of multiple children.

4.) The surviving parents, each of whom have equal rights.

5.) The majority of surviving siblings.

6.) The next degree of kinship in descending order, which includes grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc.

7.) A public official charged with arranging for disposition.

8.) Any other person(s) willing to assume responsibility.

Pallbearer: An Honor and a Privilege

The term “pallbearer” comes from the Catholic faith. A pall is a cloth that covers the casket during a funeral mass. Regardless of whether the casket is modest or elaborate, the pall signifies that all are equal before God.

The pallbearers’ responsibility is to carry the casket when needed, such as in and out of the church and to the gravesite at the cemetery. The pallbearer is a position of honor and is usually reserved for family and close friends. Historically, pallbearers have been men, but this tradition is changing. Many women now participate in this honor. The term pallbearer is used interchangeably with the term “casket bearer,” which is more encompassing of all faiths.

Typically, six or eight pallbearers are chosen to carry the casket. Families may choose to expand this role and select “honorary pallbearers” to include additional family and friends. Should Funeral Processions be Outlawed?

The following is an online quote that I once read: “I’ve never understood the reasons behind the funeral procession. Anyone who’s spent any time driving has been caught by one. They’re hard to miss. A long line of cars with orange flags flying, their headlights on and their emergency flashers blinking. They run every light that gets in their way and hold up traffic and generally get in the way. And it’s time we outlawed them.” The author went on to complain that funeral processions are a “massive inconvenience,” a “silly practice,” and are “completely useless” now that everyone has “GPS and smartphones” to find their way to the cemetery. In my opinion, the author’s own choice of words, “I’ve never understood,” define the problem perfectly. This individual possesses a complete lack of understanding.

In today’s fast-paced society, the value of a funeral is sometimes overlooked. This is an unfortunate trend, because funerals facilitate the healing process for those that are grieving. Family and friends have an opportunity to gather together, view the deceased, share memories, and proceed together to the cemetery for burial. These are important elements that should not be overlooked. Funeral services are balm to the souls of the grieving and allow proper respect to be paid to the deceased. Eliminating portions of a funeral does a great disservice to the family, and we should not detract from what is meant to be a meaningful experience. In a rebuttal to the above-mentioned post, Alan D. Wolfelt shared a poignant quote from T.S. Eliot, “You can have an experience and miss the meaning.”

The purpose of a funeral procession (cortège) is to allow family and friends the opportunity to show respect to the deceased. The word cortège literally means “to pay honor.” In areas where local laws allow, a funeral procession gives community members the opportunity to show respect by taking a moment out of their busy day to slow down or pull over as someone’s loved one takes their final earthly journey. A well-lived life that has come to an end is a valuable thing and deserves our respect and reverence.

Here in southern Utah, we typically do not follow a formal procession to the cemetery. Local police officers do not have enough resources to shut down every intersection for every funeral. We do, however, try to keep everyone together and proceed orderly and slowly to the cemetery.

Famous Last Words

The Huffington Post published an online article by Yagana Shah entitled, “Eight Famous People and their Equally Famous Last Words.” It really got me thinking – what would I want my last words to be? Here is a brief overview of Ms. Shah’s article.

1. “No, I certainly can’t.” – President John F. Kennedy. While riding in the fateful motorcade, it’s alleged that Nellie Connally, the first lady of Texas, looking at the crowds, said “You certainly can’t say that the people of Dallas haven’t given you a nice welcome.” The president reportedly made his reply just moments before he was shot.

2. “You’re right. It’s time. I love you all.” – Michael Landon. In his final days, Landon was said to have been surrounded by his nine children and his wife.

3. “My Florida water.” – Lucille Ball. The actress and comedienne asked for her perfumed water before she died.

4. “I hope I haven’t bored you.” – Elvis Presley. These were his last words at his final press conference.

5. “I finally get to see Marilyn.” – Joe DiMaggio. He must have been speaking about his ex-wife, Marilyn Monroe.

6. “I’m going away tonight.” – James Brown. The singer knew he was going to pass as he uttered his last words to his manager.

7. “I’ve had a hell of a lot of fun and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.” – Errol Flynn . He apparently uttered those words just before he died.

8. “I should never have switched from Scotch to martinis.” – Those were allegedly the last words of “Casablanca” actor Humphrey Bogart. Other stories say his actual last words were, “Goodbye, kid. Hurry back,” to his wife, Lauren Bacall, who was briefly leaving the house.

Day of the Dead

Halloween is fast approaching, and for some cultures, there is much more to Halloween than just tricks and treats. Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is celebrated throughout Mexico. Day of the Dead combines the ancient Aztec custom of celebrating ancestors with All Souls’ Day, a holiday that Spanish invaders brought to Mexico starting in the early 1500’s. This multi-day holiday focuses on gathering family and friends to pray for and remember loved ones who have passed away.

I enjoyed reading the following quote by Frances Ann Day from Latina and Latino Voices in Literature . “On October 31, All Hallows Eve, the children make a children’s altar to invite the angelitos (spirits of dead children) to come back for a visit. November 1 is All Saints Day, and the adult spirits will come to visit. November 2 is All Souls Day, when families go to the cemetery to decorate the graves and tombs of their relatives. The three-day fiesta is filled with marigolds, the flowers of the dead; muertos (the bread of the dead); sugar skulls; cardboard skeletons; tissue paper decorations; fruit and nuts; incense, and other traditional foods and decorations.”

People build altars in their homes containing the deceased’s favorite foods, beverages, photos, and memorabilia. They also travel to cemeteries to visit the deceased, clean tombstones, and talk about their ancestors. The intent is to encourage a visit from beyond the grave.

And don’t forget the skeletons! National Geographic Kids informs us that “During Day of the Dead, life-size papier-mâché skeletons and miniature plastic or clay skeletons are a common occurrence. Mexicans honor their ancestors on Day of the Dead, but they’re also reminding themselves that death is just a part of life. Hanging out with skeletons reminds people that one day they will be skeletons—but not for a very long time!”

National Day of Service and Remembrance

Many people remember exactly where they were on that fateful day when they learned that terrorists had attacked The World Trade Center, The Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93. September 11th is commonly referred to as 9/11, but this date has an additional name of which you may not be aware. Out of this unthinkable tragedy, MyGoodDeed, a 9/11 non-profit organization, spearheaded the effort to establish September 11th as National Day of Service and Remembrance. This year, I have the opportunity to take part in this great endeavor.

On this federally-recognized day, volunteers gather together to organize and participate in service projects in their local communities. This year, in conjunction with JustServe, I have the opportunity to provide service to a few of our local schools. As 9/11 falls on a Sunday this year, this service project will be held Saturday, September 10. Beginning at 8:00 a.m., volunteers will gather together to perform whatever tasks are needed at the schools, such as pulling weeds, planting flowers, power spraying concrete/asphalt, picking up trash along fence lines, washing windows, fixing broken items, etc. A food drive will also be held at Snow Canyon High School on Saturday morning. Volunteers will be collecting non-perishable food items from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., and all donations will benefit the Utah Food Bank.

Robert F. Kennedy once said, “Tragedy is a tool for the living to gain wisdom, not a guide by which to live.” Although we will never forget the terrible events that transpired on September 11, 2001, it seems appropriate to gather together to serve others and honor the good that can be accomplished by humanity. The Happiest Place on Earth…To Scatter Your Loved One’s Ashes?

Did you know that some people consider Disney Theme Parks ideal locations for scattering their loved one’s cremated remains? Exploring this anomaly is an article published in 2018 by the Wall Street Journal authored by Erich Schwartzel, “Disney World’s Big Secret: It’s a Favorite Spot to Scatter Family Ashes.”

Disney amusement parks attract millions of tourists every year, and some of these visitors have a hidden agenda – scattering their loved one’s cremated remains at one of the “Happiest Places on Earth.” Reportedly, popular scattering spots include the Haunted Mansion, the Pirates of the Caribbean, and the Magic Kingdom Flower Beds. According to the WSJ article, current and former custodians at Disney parks say identifying and vacuuming up cremated remains is a signature and secret part of working at the Disney parks. When “HEPA cleanup” is radioed to a custodian, it’s code that, once again, a park guest has scattered cremated remains and an ultrafine vacuum cleaner is required for cleanup. Some Disney custodians claim it happens routinely – about once per month.

When cremated remains are discovered on a ride, Disney workers shut down the ride due to “technical difficulties.” A manager then rides alone through the attraction looking for any piles of cremains while other employees distribute Fast Passes to pacify the guests as they leave “before the custodians turn up with their high-powered vacuums.”

This begs the question, is this legal? Absolutely not! Cremated remains may NOT be scattered on private property without permission of the property owner. Where can you scatter cremated remains? Each state has its own guidelines, so be sure to do your homework. Generally speaking, public land is usually acceptable, as is the ocean if you are one mile or more off the coastline. National Parks usually have a few specific areas available for scattering, but you must check with a park ranger beforehand just in case a permit is required. In addition, some cemeteries across the nation now offer scattering gardens. Disney Theme Parks are wonderful places to visit – but such experiences should be reserved for the living.

The History and Significance of Flag Day

America celebrates Flag Day on June 14. I recently came across an interesting article on History.com entitled, “What Is Flag Day?” Written by Jennie Cohen, this article offers some excellent insight into flag day and why it is a significant holiday.

According to the article, in 1885, school teacher Bernard Cigrand originated the idea for an annual flag day to be celebrated every June 14. That same year, he led his school in the first formal observance of the holiday. Later, in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially designated June 14 as Flag Day. Listed below are a few more interesting facts about “Old Glory” from Ms. Cohen’s article.

1. It is widely believed that Betsy Ross, who assisted the Revolutionary War effort by repairing uniforms and sewing tents, made and helped design the first American flag. However, there is no historical evidence that she contributed to Old Glory’s creation. It was not until 1870 when her grandson, William Canby, held a press conference to recount the story that the American public learned of her possible role.

2. Unlike setting an intact flag on fire, flying one upside-down is not always intended as an act of protest. According to the Flag Code, it can also be an official distress signal.

3. The Flag Code stipulates that the Stars and Stripes should not be used as apparel, bedding, or drapery.

4. Etiquette calls for American flags to be illuminated by sunlight or another light source while on display.

5. The practice of draping coffins in the American flag is not reserved for military veterans and government officials. On the contrary, any burial may incorporate this tradition.

Memorial Day and Cemetery Etiquette

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May and honors the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military. We remember and salute our veterans for the sacrifices they’ve made for our great country. Memorial Day has also long been touted as the first official holiday of the summer – the beginning of plentiful sunshine, snow cones, swimming, and, here in St. George, tremendous heat. Americans look forward to celebrating with family barbecues and visiting and decorating the graves of their loved ones.

As we celebrate Memorial Day this year, it is also important to remember that proper etiquette is to be observed while visiting a cemetery. As a funeral director, here are a few of my top tips:

1. Be respectful of the dead and the living. Family and friends gather at a cemetery to mourn their loved ones and oftentimes need personal space and reverence. Don’t use loud voices and remember to turn down the radio in your vehicle as you drive in and out of the cemetery.

2. Keep the cemetery clean. Don’t litter and take the time to pick up and dispose of any trash you observe.

3. Teach children reverence and respect. Don’t allow children to climb or stand on headstones. Also, don’t allow children to remove personal items from a gravesite. Family members often leave behind personal memorabilia, like a teddy bear or a can of soda.

4. Remove old flowers. Help keep the cemetery tidy.

5. As a general rule, pets are discouraged inside cemetery grounds, and some may not allow them at all.

6. Park in designated areas only.

7. Remember that all cemeteries close at dark.

Arbor Day will be celebrated this year on Friday, April 29 – a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant trees and enjoy the outdoors. Our Tree of Life Memorial Tree Planting Program is a unique offering that combines the significance of Arbor Day and the remembrance of a loved one.

Funeral Home Funnies

I’ve had the pleasure of being a licensed funeral director for the past 23 years, and, yes, I’ve heard nearly every joke known to man regarding my chosen profession. When a person discovers what I do for a living, oftentimes a look of shock briefly crosses their face, and then they exclaim with a wide smile, “Well, people are just dying to come see you!” Yes, I’ve heard that joke nearly one million times, and, yes, I still laugh along as if it were my first. Death and dying are very serious and solemn subjects that deserve great respect. But actress Katey Sagal once said, “When they say laughter is healing, it absolutely is the truth.” My favorite funerals have the audience crying one moment and laughing the next. Experts say that finding humor in an inevitability such as death helps us cope. And nearly half of the people I meet have a funeral joke they’re just “dying” to share with me. So, with this in mind, and with no disrespect intended, here are a few of my favorite funeral home funnies.

Two women past their prime are having a visit. The first woman tells her friend she has decided to be cremated. Her friend is shocked. The woman then states, “It’s my only hope of ever having a smokin’ hot body.”

If my body is ever found dead on a jogging trail, just know I was murdered elsewhere and dumped there.

A funeral home employee was cremated by mistake while taking a nap. I guess two people got fired that day.

I was walking home last night and decided to take a shortcut through the cemetery. Three girls walked up to me and explained that they were scared to walk near the cemetery, and could they walk with me? I agreed, and then stated, “I understand. I used to get freaked out too when I was alive.” I’ve never seen people run so fast!

Select six people in your life who have disappointed you and designate them to be your pallbearers. That way, they can let you down one last time.

I’m getting so sick of these double standards. Burn a body at the mortuary and you’re “doing your job.” Burn a body in the woods and you’re “destroying evidence.”

Everyone at my funeral gets a stun gun. The last person standing gets all my stuff.

At my funeral, take the bouquet off my coffin and throw it into the crowd to see who is next.

How to Help a Grieving Friend

We don’t always know exactly what to say or do when a friend or family member loses a loved one. We may be fearful of intruding, saying the wrong thing, or somehow worsening the situation. It is important to remember, however, that while we can’t take away their pain, we can provide a measure of comfort and support.

Simply listen . Take the time to sit down with a grieving friend and ask about their deceased loved one. Let them cry, if needed. The bereaved should feel free to express their feelings without fear of judgment, argument, or criticism.

Be willing to sit in silence . Those in mourning may sometimes find it too difficult to speak. Simply offer comfort and support with your silent presence, eye contact, a squeeze of the hand, or a reassuring hug.

Ask how you can help . Be willing to take over as many simple duties as possible. Even small tasks can add stress to a grieving person’s day. Be willing to take initiative – many people have difficulty accepting help when it’s offered.

Mention the deceased’s name . Grieving people need to feel like their loved one has not been forgotten, and mentioning their name in conversation facilitates the healing process.

Take the time to call . Text or call the person often to see how they are coping. Do not be afraid to follow-up a few days after the death or funeral. Let them know you will make time to talk when needed.

Presidents’ Day

In the coming week we will celebrate Presidents’ Day. Observed on the third Monday in February, this special day honors the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and all those who have served as president. I recently came across an interesting online article from Encyclopedia Britannica entitled “5 Wacky Facts about the Births and Deaths of U.S. Presidents.” Written by Terrence Jacobs, this article brings to light some “strange facts and coincidences in the lives and deaths of the U.S. commander in chief.”

Mr. Jacobs writes that “perhaps the most coincidental events in U.S. history are the deaths of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. They died on the same day, in the same year, and on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence—July 4, 1826…James Monroe also died on July 4, but in the year 1831. The only president of the United States to be born on July 4 was Calvin Coolidge in 1872.”

Millard Fillmore and William Howard Taft both died on March 8 – Fillmore in 1874 at age 74, and Taft in 1930 at age 72. “At 340 pounds, it is somewhat remarkable that Taft exceeded the life expectancy of his time. He once wrote to a friend: ‘Took a long horseback ride today, feel fine.’ The friend replied: ‘How’s the horse?’”

Harry Truman and Gerald Ford both died on December 26 – Truman in 1972 and Ford in 2006. “At the time of his death, at age 93, Ford was the president who had lived the longest life, though his record was later broken by George H.W. Bush.”

We may never reach presidential status, but we certainly deserve to be honored at the time of our death. Death and Valentine’s Day

I was surprised to learn that Valentine’s Day may have a history rooted in death – and violence, for that matter. An article on www.history.com entitled “This Day in History – February 14 – St. Valentine beheaded” is a very interesting read. Written by the history.com editors and originally published on November 24, 2009, the article details the life of Valentine, a holy priest in Rome in the days of Emperor Claudius II. On February 14, around the year 270 A.D., Valentine was allegedly executed.

Quoting the article, “Under the rule of Claudius the Cruel, Rome was involved in many unpopular and bloody campaigns. The emperor had to maintain a strong army, but was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. Claudius believed that Roman men were unwilling to join the army because of their strong attachment to their wives and families.

To get rid of the problem, Claudius banned all marriages and engagements in Rome. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.

When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Valentine was arrested and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. The sentence was carried out on February 14, on or about the year 270.

Legend also has it that while in jail, St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it ‘From Your Valentine.’ For his great service, Valentine was named a saint after his death.

In truth, the exact origins and identity of St. Valentine are unclear. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, ‘At least three different Saint Valentines, all of them martyrs, are mentioned in the early martyrologies under the date of 14 February.’ One was a priest in Rome, the second one was a bishop of Interamna (now Terni, Italy) and the third St. Valentine was a martyr in the Roman province of Africa.”

No matter the origin of the holiday, Valentine’s Day is a day to remember and appreciate those we love. It’s important to remember never to take for granted the time we have to spend together.

Pre-planning Cremation: Where to Begin?

A new year is upon us, and many individuals are interested in putting their affairs in order. Pre-planning your final arrangements is an excellent way to accomplish this resolution. As you begin the cremation pre-planning process, it is important to remember that you are not just planning for yourself. You are making arrangements and decisions that will greatly affect your loved ones.

Simply telling your family members or friends that you wish to be cremated is not enough. Utah law requires a person to provide written directions, or “advance directions.” These directions include designating a funeral service establishment, providing directions for cremation arrangements, providing your signature (as well as the signature of two unrelated witnesses), and providing resources to carry out the directions. If advance directions are not designated ahead of time, the legal next-of-kin has the authority and responsibility to make any and all decisions at the time of death. Make a Difference this Holiday Season

The holiday season is upon us – a time well spent with family and friends. It’s a time to respectfully look back at the year behind us and excitedly ahead to the year in front of us. Let’s also consider that the holiday season is a time to help make our world a better place and to leave it just a little bit better than we found it. An article on www.inc.com entitled “How to Help Others in Your Community This Holiday Season” offers insight into easy ways to make a difference in your community. And as author John Hall reminds us, you don’t need to be a billionaire philanthropist to make a difference. Here are a few of his ideas:

Volunteer Your Time. Check with your local food bank, animal shelter, community resource center, etc. Many community organizations are allowing volunteer work to resume in the midst of the on-going pandemic. Even a few hours volunteered on a Saturday can make a tremendous difference.

Donate to Community Causes. Examples include donating blood at the local Red Cross, contributing monetarily to your church collection, or leaving newly-purchased toys at your local Toys for Tots collection center. Consider dropping off a bag of dog food at an animal shelter or donating cleaning supplies or toiletries to a homeless shelter.

Provide a Drive-Thru Surprise. The next time you’re waiting in line for your food or drink order, consider paying for the person behind you. This random act of kindness may not seem like much, but it has the potential to send a ripple effect of kindness throughout your community.

Southern Utah is one of the greatest places in the world to live, and we are fortunate to call it our home. It is here that we have had the pleasure of growing our funeral home since 2008. Our community is very important; therefore, we created the Serenity Pay It Forward Account.

Losing a child is arguably one of the most difficult trials a family can endure, and we want to help. The Serenity Pay It Forward Account is designed to assist families who have lost a child due to an accident, illness, or other tragedy. We heavily discount or donate our professional service fees, but outside funeral costs add up quickly. Other expenses include obituaries, flowers, caskets, vaults, cemetery property, headstones, etc. We created our Serenity Pay It Forward Account to help ease the family’s financial burden.

Community members have the opportunity of participating in two ways – by rounding up a funeral bill or through a memorial donation. Each donation is placed in our Pay It Forward Account. Adapting to Grief During Thanksgiving

I recently read an interesting article entitled “How to Survive Thanksgiving Day Grief.” Authored by Chris Raymond and published by verywellhealth.com, this article gives excellent insight into celebrating a holiday while mourning a loved one and offers five tips to support your emotional well-being.

Permit Yourself to Say No. Thanksgiving is a holiday steeped in tradition, but, if this year finds you feeling overwhelmed, take the time to determine how much responsibility you feel comfortable assuming. As the author states, “remind yourself that it’s okay to say ‘no’ as you adjust to life after loss and that those who love you will understand.”

Let It Go. Strive to let go of the perfection we tend to envision when we picture Thanksgiving, and “…give yourself a pass this Thanksgiving by accepting things as they are, even if they fall short of the Norman Rockwell image in your head.”

Take Control of Your Fear. Many people are afraid to remember their loved ones during the holidays, fearing that the memories will be too overwhelming. Instead, “empower yourself by incorporating his or her memory into your Thanksgiving plans. For example, place a favorite photograph of your loved one and a lit candle in a quiet spot that signifies his or her presence in your hearts throughout the day.”

Start Fresh. Traditions are wonderful, “but ask yourself if a particular tradition will really bring you joy this year or if you just feel pressure to do something because you’ve always done it this way and others expect it.” From baking homemade pies to shopping on Black Friday, if it’s too much, consider establishing new traditions.

Know Your Limits. Strive to determine your limits ahead of time. Limit social activity accordingly and attend events that fit your energy and mood. Your emotional well-being is of utmost importance at this time of year.

Veterans Burial Benefits

I am often asked what type of benefits veterans are entitled to at the time of their death. Below is a condensed list of the basic burial benefits available to a veteran. To be clear, the following is not a comprehensive list. For full eligibility requirements and benefits, please visit www.va.gov .

Current members of the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard) are considered eligible for veterans burial benefits. Also eligible are any veterans who were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable, i.e., retired, medical discharge, honorable discharge, etc. Veterans’ spouses and their dependent children are also eligible for most burial benefits.

Available at no cost to the family, veterans burial benefits include a gravesite in any of our 155 national cemeteries , opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, a headstone/grave marker, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate . A veteran is also entitled to an honor guard consisting of service members (retired or active duty) that fold and present the flag, play taps, and occasionally perform a gun salute. These benefits apply to traditional casket burials as well as cremation burials. A veteran who chooses to be buried in a private cemetery rather than a national cemetery is also entitled to these benefits; however, the veteran must purchase the gravesite and pay out-of-pocket for the opening and closing fees at the cemetery. The veteran’s family is then reimbursed through a burial allowance to help offset the charges.

Although veterans burial benefits do cover burial/cemetery expenses, they do NOT cover funeral home expenses. It is the family’s responsibility to pay for any and all funeral home-incurred expenses, such as professional service fees, caskets, death certificates, obituaries, flowers, etc.

Death and Halloween

A 2018 Washington Post article entitled “How Death Disappeared from Halloween” recently captivated my attention. Written by Vittoria Elliott and Kevin McDonald, this article explores why Americans tend to avoid the topic of death and how the celebration of Halloween has evolved over time.

Halloween has its origins in Samhain, a Celtic Irish holiday. Author Lisa Morton writes that “Samhain was a New Year’s celebration held in the fall, a sort of seasonal acknowledgment of the annual change from a season of life to one of death.” Celebrations such as All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day also morphed into existence. But, over time, American Halloween celebrations lost connection to the honoring of deceased ancestors and shifted to trick-or-treating.

Sarah Chavez, executive director of the Order of the Good Death, says that Halloween in the United States “mirrors our experience with death directly. We used to take care of our dead in our homes — people used to die at home. We took care of our loved ones, dug their graves. We were there through the entire process. We have no idea what death looks like anymore.”

Many people die in hospitals or nursing homes. Anita Hannig, professor at Brandeis University, notes that “The responsibilities of death have been outsourced,” adding that hospitals and morticians allow ordinary people to avoid directly engaging with death. “When someone dies in a hospital, oftentimes the body will be whisked away almost immediately and family and friends won’t see it again until after it’s been embalmed.” Hannig’s research also shows that memorial services are becoming less common. This is a concerning trend, as I believe society has a moral responsibility to honor and respect its dead.

As we feel a change in the seasons this October, may we all pause to remember our deceased loved ones and the impact they had on the world they left behind.

When Death Occurs Away From Home

Few things in life are more stressful than dealing with the death of a loved one. But can you imagine a loved one unexpectedly dying while away from home? Most people would be completely unprepared if a death occurred during a vacation, business trip, or family visit. What would you do? Where would you begin?

I have helped many people deal with tragic circumstances throughout my twenty-two years in the funeral business. In some instances, individuals from southern Utah have traveled to other states or foreign countries and have passed away. In other cases, visitors to our beautiful area have died unexpectedly. Their traveling companions experience the unthinkable. Each circumstance is different and carries its own unique challenges, especially when foreign countries have specific requirements for shipping or receiving human remains.

One common misconception is that standard travel insurance will take care of all of the details. This assumption is incorrect. Travel insurance companies will provide financial assistance but still require the resources of a local funeral home. The best course of action is for an individual to make pre-arrangements before they travel. Directions and personal preferences should be recorded and made readily available for family members as well as kept on file at a local funeral home. This information should also include the statistical information necessary to complete a death certificate and other required documentation. Individuals should carry the contact information of their local funeral home in their wallet for the duration of their travel.

For those interested, we do, however, offer a specific funeral travel plan that covers the funeral home fees at the location of death. It also covers the expenses incurred to ship a body home. The cost is a single payment of $285 and will cover the individual for life.

Aging Humorously

Getting older isn’t what it used to be. Fifty is the new thirty, and people that choose to take care of themselves seem to live longer and better lives. That being said, there is still a fair amount of trauma and stress involved in the aging process. I am a triathlete and have been competing for many years. Even though I still enjoy training, the process isn’t getting easier as I age. I have photos from races in which I am younger, and I’m smiling while I’m running. I don’t smile as much as I used to. My mind tells me to go faster, and my body responds with a resolute, “No!”

I couldn’t help but chuckle when I read John Blumenthal’s article for the HuffPost entitled “35 Classic One-liners About Aging.” Here is a selection of my favorites:

Cremation Popularity and Five Interesting Facts

Cremation continues to maintain its upward trend in popularity. According to the Cremation Association of North America, (CANA), in 2019, the cremation rate in the United States was 54.6%. In 2020, 56.1%. Future projections indicate that by 2025, the cremation rate in the United States will reach 65.2%, and by 2030, 72.8%. Many factors have contributed to the rise in cremation’s popularity as the disposition of choice. “I can’t afford a funeral” is a phrase I’ve heard repeated many times. However, I believe everyone can afford a funeral if you consider the following: whom you select, what you select, and how you plan.
