David Paul Brown

David Paul Brown passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, June 24th, 2024. His faithful wife, Patricia England Brown, was by his side and caring for him right to the end. He was born January 21, 1941 at the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah to John Paul Brown and June Larsen Brown. He was the first one to admit he was a difficult child and school was not pleasant for him or the teachers. He had a turn around when he attended an experimental school at the University of Utah called the Stewart Teacher Training School. He said, “For the first time, I finally realized that I was smart and good.” However, when he advanced to high school, as the first class at the brand new Highland High School, he struggled again. One day, the Vice Principal called him into his office and said, “You know, you’re just not cut out for scholastics. You ought to go join the military because there’s no place for you in academics.” So, as soon as he could he joined the military. He was shocked to hear that he had scored above average in every single subject. He was told by the recruiter he was smart enough to do anything in the military he wanted. He went to spy school and served in the Navy and eventually left the military and attended the University of Utah. He became a successful lawyer and a judge for many years. He married Carol Setterberg and they had one daughter, Shelly DeLain. They divorced and he married Dixie Lynne Johnson and they had two daughters, Joylynne Suzanne and Jennifer Eden. They later divorced and he married Patricia England and became a step father to Elisabeth Janelle and Richard Nathaniel. He seemed to be born with a love for horses and music. He was incredibly knowledgeable, opinionated, and passionate about both. When it came to horses, it was quarter horses and when it came to music, it was opera and classical that most inspired him. Sometimes he’d pull off to the side of the road to listen to a beautiful tenor, too stunned to drive. He lived for over twenty years in South Jordan where he served as the judge for the city and served in the Jordan River Temple. He loved the ocean and the Polynesian culture and his lifelong dream of living in Hawaii finally became a reality when he and Patty built a house in Hilo. Unfortunately, lung complications caused him to have to move back to Utah. They settled for the last of his life in Hurricane where he made many dear friends and had the opportunity to serve in the St. George temple. He started working young and was an incredibly hard worker his whole life. His jobs included cleaning at school, early mornings at a bakery, teaching at a roller skating rink, building roads, managing an apartment complex to name just a few, all to get him through undergraduate and eventually law school. He is preceded in death by his father, John Paul Brown, his mother, June Larsen Brown, his sister Anne Reeves, his son in law, Brian Locke, grandparents, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and beloved friends. He is survived by his wife, Patricia England Brown, his children, Shelly Locke, Joylynne Brown, Jennifer Simpson (Lorin), Elisabeth Mangiagli (Daniel), and Richard England (Amanda), his grandchildren, DeLayne Locke, Connor Emery, Jessica Gregory (Spencer), Landon Simpson (Kaylee), Faith Locke, Rebecca Simpson, Holland Simpson, Sierra Brown, Katelyn Simpson, Clara Larsen, Grace Simpson, Henry Larsen, Amira Mangiagli, Teddy England, and Lainy England, and great grandchild, Hudson Simpson. A devastating car accident in 1981 left him paralyzed as a paraplegic for over 43 years. As successful as he was in business, he will be most remembered for his incredible example of enduring to the end. He suffered many difficult health challenges due to his paralysis, not to mention losing the ability to ride his beloved horses. He bounced back more times than any of us thought possible, including defying doctors’ predicted life expectancy by over 20 years. He was supported and helped by countless angels on earth who made it possible for him to live life despite his physical limitations. Now he is finally free. Free of pain, free of the wheelchair, free of lung problems, infections, spasms, and free to walk. He was not afraid to die as he had confidence in the eternal plan of God, who “shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away.” (Revelations 21:4). After so many years of enduring such great challenges, he can now say, “I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7) Farewell to our husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, nephew, and friend. Until we meet again. A viewing will be held in his honor on Saturday, July 13th, 10:00-11:45 AM at 3364 W. 11400 S. South Jordan, LDS church Family Prayer at 11:45. Interment will follow (roughly 12:30) at Crescent Cemetery 11105 S. State Street, Sandy. A luncheon for family and friends following the interment will be held at 3364 W. 11400 S. South Jordan. An additional viewing will be held on July 5th at the Hurricane 11th ward, 452 N. 2600 W. Hurricane, from 6:00-8:00 PM In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s or Shriners hospital.
