Kay Auer Wind

Kay Auer Wind passed away on February 1, 2016, at the Brookdale Southgate Assisted Living Facility in St George, Utah, of advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease. He was born March 12, 1942, in Delta, Utah to Harold Rollin Wind and Thora Tippetts Wind. Kay attended Delta Elementary School until the age of 10 when the family moved to Wendover, Utah where he lived for the next six years and attended school at Wendover Elementary and Jr. High School. Since there was neither a junior or senior year provided in Wendover, the Tooele County School District provided room and board for those wishing to complete High School. During those two years Kay attended Grantsville High School some 90 miles away and graduated in 1960. While there he participated in varsity football and numerous school activities and was elected by the student body as the “most handsome male” in the school in his senior year. Because of the distance, he roomed with the Robert Lawrence family in Grantsville and traveled home on the weekends. He spent the summers working in his father’s store in Wendover. When time came for college, he chose to attend the then named Church College of Hawaii where he spent one semester. At his own admission, he said that he didn’t learn a lot but had a wonderful time enjoying the sunshine and surf in the island paradise. At the age of 19 he was called to serve in the Irish Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints under President Stephen Covey and spent two years working hard in an attempt to spread the gospel on another green and beautiful island. He became well known as holding the record for the most van crashes in the mission during his two year stay. Fortunately none of them were very serious. In his defense, it’s not easy driving on the left side of the road. After his mission he attended Brigham Young University for a short time until he met his first wife Marsha Brimhall. Together they had five children, three boys and two girls. During this time they lived in the Provo area where Kay worked in the retail grocery business which was to become his life’s work until such time that he retired. After a number of years they divorced and Kay moved to Las Vegas, Nevada with his new wife Susan Hinckley and her two daughters. Kay and Susan had four boys and were later divorced. He met and married Sharon Martin and remained in Las Vegas until he retired. They then moved to Bayfield, Colorado located in the mountains above Durango. He remained in Bayfield until such time that his sister, Jola, obtained guardianship and with his other siblings in the St. George area traveled to Durango in early January to bring him back to be with his family for personal care. His wife remained in a hospice care facility in Durango until her death just three days before Kay passed. Kay was very bright and curious about the world around him and was often found reading challenging books during his free time. He also loved his church, his pets, the wonders of nature, and rocks. He created beautiful jewelry from his discoveries and often reflected that he wished he could have made it his profession. He is survived by: his children Kelly, Bradley, Jake, Rebecca, Kimberlee, Christian, Timothy, Jeffrey, Michael, and stepdaughters Rebecca and Camille; numerous grandchildren; siblings Bruce Little, (Jeanene), St. George, Utah, Harry Wind, (Ilene), Draper, Utah, Jerry Wind, (Bonnie) Santa Clara, Utah, and Jola Wind Holler, (James), Hurricane, Utah. He was preceded in death by: his parents, his wife Sharon, and his sister Thora May Wright. The family wishes to thank those who cared for him including his stepson Forrest Martin and wife Bonnie in Bayfield who cared both for Kay and his wife Sharon during very difficult times, and for the dedicated staff at Brookdale who made his final days safe and comfortable. For family and friends who visited and cared for him prior to placing him in the care facility. We especially thank Jim and Jola Holler whose home became a temporary place of care where many were able to come and visit to help Kay realize how very much he was loved by those who knew him. A graveside service will be held at the Hurricane City Cemetery on Friday, February 5th at 2:00 P.M.
