Stephen Gary Quinn

Stephen Gary Quinn, 73, passed away peacefully at his home in St. George, UT on November 19, 2024, due to complications from metastatic melanoma. He was born October 7, 1951 in Richfield, UT, the eldest of three children to Gary Wayne and Darlene Jensen Quinn. He spent his childhood in Richfield, loving the surrounding mountains and spending time with family in nearby Marysvale and Junction, particularly his uncle Alan who was about the same age. At age 12, the family moved to Taylorsville, UT, where his father purchased a service station. Stephen attended Granger High School before attending the University of Utah. From his youth through his college years, he was always involved in sports, especially basketball and baseball. It was because of these sports and his good friends, particularly a friend who had recently returned from a mission, that he felt drawn to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Even though he was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as a child, his family did not actively participate until Stephen felt his testimony grow as an adult and eventually was called to serve a mission in Wales when he was 21. After returning from his mission, he changed allegiance and attended the BYU School of Business where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in accounting. After graduating, Stephen worked for U.S. Steel and later the University of Utah campus bookstore where he met his wife-to-be, Carol Dudley. They married on January 10th, 1987, and later that year moved to Palm Springs, CA, where Stephen worked as the controller for a limousine company. They then returned to Utah in 1988, settling in St. George. The couple welcomed four children, Ren, J.D., Jason, and Mary, within the next nine years. Stephen loved supporting his children in every sport, music, dance, and church activity, particularly coaching their sports teams. He worked as a CPA for 35 years at Hafen Buckner Everett & Graff. He was always a numbers person and enjoyed most working as the audit manager for the firm. He also was a member of the Rotary Club of Dixie Sunrise for over 25 years. He served as treasurer, received awards for 100% attendance, and was twice named a Paul Harris fellow. As a valiant member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he served as a YSA rep, young men's president, high counselor, two-time Elders quorum president, and bishop of the St George East Stake 5th ward for nearly seven years. During his tenure as bishop, he often assisted his wife in the nursery, soothing distraught children and many would fall asleep in his care. He often encouraged the members of his ward to read the Ensign magazine monthly, always with an open copy himself at home and reading it daily alongside his scriptures. From 2019-2024, Stephen and Carol served in a branch of their stake at The Meadows assisted living home. They cherished the residents, who became dear friends. Despite his cancer diagnosis, he continued to attend church to administer the sacrament to those he loved. His resilience in fighting cancer was remarkable. He is survived by his wife Carol, children Ren (Tia), J.D., Jason (Janzen), and Mary; his brother Eddie Quinn, sister Darlana Quinn; and grandchildren Eden, Renae, Lydia, Stevie, Joey, and Clover. Special thanks to Dr. Te, Dr. Rex, Chaz, Erika, Natalie, Ryan, Alison, Mindy, and everyone with a candy dish on their desk. Michelle Johnson, you are the best. Zion's Way hospice, Damon, and nurse Michelle, were his angels during his last 12 days. You are all much loved and appreciated for your kind and most tender care. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, November 26, at 11:00 am at the LDS chapel on 550 East 700 South, St. George, UT. Visitations will be held Monday evening from 6:00-7:30 and again Tuesday morning prior to the service from 9:30-1030, both at the chapel. Interment will follow the service at the Tonaquint Cemetery.
