Andrew Davlin Jr

Andrew Davlin Jr, 93, (Andy), passed away after battling prostate cancer on May 7, 2022, in St. George, Utah. Born on March 25, 1929 in Manhattan, NY to Andrew Jackson Davlin and Ella Grant (Virginia) Mckenna, Andrew grew up as their only child in Lake Mohawk NJ and Manhattan NY. Andrew spent his childhood summers traveling with his parents in the family Packard across America. He loved these adventures and his junior role in their family magazine subscription business during these challenging times of pre-World War II. Andrew pursued his education staying close to home and graduated high school as a boarding student from Blair Academy in Blairstown NJ in 1946 and then earned his B.A. in economics from Princeton University in 1951. Consistent with the era, Andrew joined the Navy immediately after Princeton where he served 3 years during the Korean War as Ensign and Commandant of the Third Navy District. He was stationed in Newport, Rhode Island and Western Europe and attended both the USN School of Justice and Gunnery Officers Ordinance School. His service also earned him the European Occupational Ribbon and the American Defense Service Ribbon. Post Navy, Andy entered Columbia University to pursue his passion and interest in business, getting his MBA in 1956. It was at Columbia where he met and married his first wife, Mary D. Scheffler in 1957 and together they had six children, five of whom survive him: Cynthia Lussier Berry, Andrew Davlin III (deceased), Virginia Maria Davlin, Helen Kingsley Davlin, Harold Dalton Davlin and William Emery Barber Davlin. The young family lived in Princeton, NJ and Andy worked in Manhattan as a Partner at Tucker Anthony Brokerage and then a Partner for Hambrecht & Quist in San Francisco. He and Mary divorced in 1975 and Andy pursued his career with great tenacity and found time for his children during summers by providing hiking, camping, and west coast experiences. His passion for travel extended to a pilot’s license and he flew the kids back and forth in his Helio Courier which provided for an abundance of fascinating/terrifying stories, laughs, incredulous antics, and lasting memories. In 1983, Andy married Doris J Christianson, Mother of his two stepchildren, Betsy and Glenn Boyer. Together they traveled and Andy focused on entrepreneurial business pursuits including aquaculture, gold mining and managing equities. When Doris died in 2004, Andy was living in Boulder City, Nevada where he continued to go to his office daily until his late eighties. Andy was an avid reader of dozens of periodicals, to include the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and any and all alumni magazines. Stacked shelves confirmed that printed publications dating back to the sixties trumped digital editions! He was known to copy articles and send them to out to his network with advice and general observation. It wasn’t unusual for one of his grandchildren (9) or step-grandchildren (4) to receive folders of research or market studies on a topic that drove Andy’s interests. He was an avid learner and loved to share his opinions! Grandy Andy was also well known for his “when I was at Blair, when I was at Princeton” stories and many alumni events provided him great celebration and happiness. Andy spent his last years at an assisted living home, Sterling Court, in St. George, Utah where he dressed in his blazer for each meal, was an activist who pushed for ice cream to be served daily and carried the Wall St Journal under his arm to the dining room without fail. He will be missed, and the family hopes they serve chocolate in heaven.
