Betty Louise Robbins Carter

Our mother, Betty Louise Robbins Carter, passed away on August 23, 2026, in her home in St. George, Utah, surrounded by her children. Mother was born in 1932 in Afton, Wyoming. She grew up during the Depression and war years. This beautiful, ringlet-haired little girl was doted on by her parents and adored (and teased!) by her two brothers and sister. She was always obedient and worked hard in the family grocery store. These experiences shaped much of who she became and what she accomplished in life. Despite the challenges of the time, Mom would say she had an idyllic childhood and the best family ever. Her brothers and sister always remained close. Mom attended Spencer Elementary, Lincoln High School, and Brigham Young University. On Christmas 1954, our dad, while on a date with another girl, couldn’t stop looking at Mom in the rear-view mirror. That night he went home and told his parents, “I have met the girl I am going to marry.” Two weeks later, Mom and Dad were engaged. Mom and Dad were sealed for time and all eternity on May 11, 1955, in the Salt Lake Temple. From the very beginning, her life’s mission was to be a devoted wife and a caring mother. Since our dad drove truck, raising Michael, Bart, Greg, Roger, Raylene, Dallan, and Sheralyn fell on Mom. She did it magnificently while also caring for Dad, building a home, being friends with her neighbors, serving in her church, and enjoying occasional crafting. Mom was always happy and positive. She made us children feel so special as individuals while also teaching us our place in the family. After Dad retired, they moved to St. George in 1994 and finally made up for lost time. From that first look in the mirror, they remained sweethearts forever. They loved their new home and the many friends they made there. Mom loved her faith and was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Although she served in many capacities, she had a special talent for serving children. Our mom was beautiful and loved dressing up for an evening dancing with Dad. A loyal and thoughtful friend, she never forgot a birthday or special occasion. She was strong enough to "walk off" a broken neck, but tender-hearted enough to share half her meal with those around her. She had a beautiful smile despite her challenges. She was so many things, but the one thing she would want everyone to know above all else is that she was a mother…our mother. How lucky we have been. Betty is preceded in death by her sweetheart, Ray Carter. Her parents, Charles and Zola Robbins, and Reed and Severina Carter (Father and mother-in-law). Her two brothers, Clyde and Dale Robbins; her sister and best friend, Reta Dexter; and her eldest son, Michael Carter. She is survived by her children, Bart (Kellie) Carter of Orem. Gregory (Carrie) Carter of Cove. Roger (Stephanie) Carter of Washington. Raylene (Jeff) Long of Salem, Dallan (Deborah) Carter of Spring Lake, and Sheralyn (Todd) Hopkinson of Heber; her daughter-in-law, Camille Carter of Milford (daughter-in-law), and sister-in-law, Connie Rodeback of St. George (Sister-in-law). She also loved her 24 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held for Betty on Saturday, August 29, at 11:00 pm at the Slickrock LDS ward house on 2434 East Riverside Drive. St. George, Utah. A viewing will be held before the service from 9:30-10:30. Interment will be at Washington City Cemetery. All are welcome. The family expresses its deepest thanks to Mom’s hospice team, the Slickrock Ward, for their compassionate service, and their many friends from the Rio Virgin Park. Mom loved you all!
