Edward John Arlidge

Edward John (EJ) Arlidge died in his St. George home, where he lived alone on January 1, 2017, from causes unknown at this time. EJ was born in Burbank, CA August 3, 1959. His parents had planned for a girl and had only a girl’s name ready. His father was out of town on business so it fell to his mother to name him. Thus, Edward John became the boy’s given name, but the nurses and everyone called him EJ from that day forward. EJ started school in Reseda, California. The most memorable event of his grammar period was being called to be interviewed on the Art Linkletter National Television Show. Mr. Linkletter asked EJ what he wanted to do when he grew up. Without hesitation EJ said, “I want to be a ham!” Upon recovery, Mr. Linkletter asked what one does as a ham. EJ then gave a long and complicated explanation of the “Radio Relay League” its history, some of amateur’s great deeds, and how “ham radio operators had improved the technology over the years”. EJ graduated from Wester High School in Las Vegas and went on to do some work as a University of Nevada Las Vegas. During his last years in high school he did ranch work during the summer and worked part time during the winter as a ground crewman for Delta Airlines. He finally decided to work full time for Delta and worked his way up through Delta’s supervisory and managerial positions. In 2000, EJ was working for Delta in Rochester, New York when the airlines were cutting back on personnel and cots. EJ retired and began working in the mortgage business. He returned to the Southwest, namely, St. George, UT, the family’s second home. He did well in the mortgage business with his own company, Wells Fargo, and Zion’s Bank. At Zion’s Bank, he became a commercial lender, but retired after an old back injury kept him from working. He ended up having surgery that did not go well and EJ was unable to work any longer. EJ had a passion for outside activities such as golf, riding his Harley, and getting away to the family ranch which he did as his health would allow. He came to love fireworks and helped with nearly every fireworks display this area has had over the past 15 years. He was asking about the next firework show just before his passing. EJ had many friends and was a friend to all he met. If he saw someone in need of help he went to help no matter the problem. He belonged to Kiwanis International and helped run the Red Rocks Car Show for the Kiwanis. He loved to give and help other social and fraternal organizations and motorcycle clubs. EJ also served for many years on the Board for The Learning Center for Families. EJ was not married at the time of his death and had no children. He was preceded in death by: his mother, Sandra Marie Arlidge and his brother James William Arlidge. He is survived by: his father, John W. Arlidge. Services will be held at the St. James LDS Chapel on January 13, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. followed by a graveside service at the St. George City Cemetery at 700 East 100 South in St. George, UT.
