John Stewart Winn

John Stewart Winn, age 70, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on July 9, 2023, after a long battle with cancer. Stewart, “Stu” was born in Bakersfield, California on January 29, 1953, to Dean C. Winn and Ruby B. Winn. He was raised in Bakersfield, the second of four sons. Stu was a police officer in Kern County, California followed by a move to the Orem, Utah Police Department, where he met and married the love of his life, Patti Keys, in Payson, Utah on January 24, 1984. Stu and Patti moved to Portland, Oregon where Stu served in law enforcement for 30 years. Stu skillfully fulfilled many different assignments while working at the Portland Police Bureau. He finished his career by working in the Homicide Division. As a youth growing up in Bakersfield, Stu was an accomplished athlete. He played football and, swam competitively for West High School, and was recruited for the BYU swim team. He faithfully served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Texas South Mission in 1972 and 1973. Stu is survived by his wife Patti and seven children: Christin (Derron) Bishop, Heather (Dustin) Jones, Jay (Felicia) Winn, Spencer (Derek) Winn, Marie, Becca, and Kellie (Francis) as well as his brothers Clive (Kathy), Jeff, Steve (Susan), and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and mother. We are deeply grateful for the time we had with Stu. He was a blessing in the lives of everyone who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Sunshine Division, a food bank and local charity close to Stewart’s heart run by the Portland Police Bureau. (www.sunshinedivision.org) Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 13 with a visitation from 9:30 am to 10:15 am followed by the funeral at 10:30 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Bloomington Meetinghouse (3381 Mulberry Drive, St. George, Utah 84790.)
