Leslie Robert Stimpson

Leslie Robert Stimpson, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and lifelong servant to his community and his faith, passed away peacefully at his daughter's home surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Les was born on December 17, 1944, in Rupert, Idaho. After spending several years with his family in California, he returned to Idaho as a young boy and settled in Heyburn. It was there that Lana Jeanne Cherry welcomed him as the “new kid on the block.” That simple act of kindness grew into a lifetime of love. They were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on July 28, 1966, and shared 58 devoted years together. After Lana’s passing last year, Les spoke often of his hope to be reunited with her, a hope now fulfilled. Les served faithfully in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his life. He served a mission in the Great Lakes area and later held various church callings, including serving as a counselor in the bishopric of both his family ward in Idaho Falls and the BYU–Idaho singles ward. His service was never about recognition, but about love. He genuinely cared for people and made friends wherever he went, always eager to talk, listen, and connect. Les devoted his life to service, both to his family and to his community. He served over 30 years in law enforcement, beginning his career in Shoshone, then with the Burley Police Department and later as a Sergeant with the Idaho State Police. Finally towards the end of his career, he was an investigator for the Idaho Bureau of Investigations. At home, his children knew him as a calm, reliable presence who carried his responsibilities with humility and integrity, creating a sense of safety and stability. Those same qualities defined his public service, where he was respected for his professionalism, fairness, and sound judgment. At home, Les found joy in simple blessings, family camping trips, scenic drives through Yellowstone, Island Park, Jackson Hole, and the Grand Tetons, and meaningful family reunions in West Piney. Above all, he cherished time with his family and grandchildren, taking a sincere interest in their lives and always offering encouragement and guidance. Les is preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Tolman Stimpson, father, Robert James Stimpson, brother Randy Stimpson, and wife, Lana Jeanne Stimpson. He is survived by his eight children: Sheri (Larry) Hansen, Mark (Kathie) Stimpson, James (Richelle) Stimpson, Dan (Melanie) Stimpson, Wendy (Aaron) Murdock, Jared Stimpson, Sarah (Shawn) Birch, and Kody (Lisa) Stimpson; and leaves behind a legacy of 48 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 10, 2025 with a viewing at 10:00 a.m. at Hansen Mortuary in Rupert, Idaho. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Heyburn.
