Sue Ann Matthews

Sue Ann Matthews, of Hurricane, Utah, passed away September 5, 2023, at the age of 64, after a long battle of MS. She was born on November 19, 1958, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Gerald Bud Donohue and Mabel Ethel Rigg. Being a survivor from the first day of her life, Sue was born early, weighing only a little over two pounds. Sue was brought home by her parents to keep her comfortable with the expectation for her to pass away. With a lot of love and a small box nestled next to a wood burning oven she survived. That’s who she was, a survivor! Sue was also a protector to her siblings (Vickie Donohue and Bryant Donohue). She had many black eyes fighting anyone who messed with her or her family. Sue came from very humble beginnings but was a force to be reckoned with. She had a spunky personality and a heart the size of Texas! Sue could fix anything (including a car). She was a single mom of four for many years and often worked two jobs. Sue would never take a handout (according to her, someone else could always use it more). At the age of 14, she got her first job at Shelia’s Fish and Chips and from there she always had a job. In her career, she worked at Petrolane Gas, Hurricane lunchroom, and her last and favorite job was a phlebotomist at the IHC Hurricane Valley Clinic. Sue also served at the St. George LDS Temple. In October 1973, Sue had her first daughter, Staci Elaine Kroff. Sue met her first husband, Scott Morgan Beams, in 1977, together they had two sons, Daniel Bud Beams and James Bryant Scott Beams. They later divorced and she was single for many years. On November 11, 1990, Sue married Robin Hensen Matthews of Virgin, Utah, she then gained two more sons, Jody Matthews and Coby Matthews. Together they had one daughter, Samantha Matthews Polanco. Sue was a loving mother, grandmother to 17 grandkids, and great-grandmother to 7 great-grandkids and 3 dogs. She had an amazing relationship with her father in heaven. She will be greatly missed. Sue is survived by her daughters, Staci Elaine Kroff (Daniel Kroff) of Virgin, Utah, and Smantha Polanco (Josh Polanco) of La Verkin, Utah; her sons, Daniel Bud Beams (Kristi Beams) of Delta, Utah, James Bryant Scott Beams (Kasidee Beams) of Hurricane, Utah, and Colby Matthews (Marja Matthews) of La Verkin, Utah; and her sister Vickie Elaine Donohue. Sue is preceded in death by her parents, Gerald Bud Donohue and Mabel Ethel Rigg; her husband, Robin Hensen Matthews; her brother, Bryant Donohue; and her sons, Jeremy Donohue and Jody Matthews. The Funeral Services for Sue will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023, at 11:00 am at the La Verkin LDS Stake Center, located at 70 South 300 West, La Verkin, Utah, 84745. A viewing will be held prior, at 10:00 am. Interment will take place at the Virgin Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, 150 West Street, Virgin, Utah, 84779, after the services.
