Thomas Howard

Thomas Howard, 75, passed away on January 25, 2024, in his home, surrounded by family. Tom was born on March 24, 1948, in Payson, UT to Theodore (Bob) and Irene Howard. Tom was raised in Nephi, Utah, and was the youngest of three boys. He enjoyed playing football and basketball and often said participating in sports was the ONLY reason he kept his grades up and was able to graduate high school. Tom met his sweetheart, Cindy, during high school and they were married on March 7, 1969, in the Manti LDS temple. Soon after marriage, Tom was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and was stationed in Fort Riley, KS. While there, they welcomed their first child, Stephanie Ann. When his time in the army ended, they returned to Nephi, where they welcomed the rest of their children: Shalayne Marie, Jennifer Lyn, Amy Jo, Amanda Rae, Molly Sue, Erin Lee, and Jacob Richard. One of Tom’s proudest accomplishments was building his family a home in Nephi. Tom and Cindy were a formidable team, working side by side until their home was complete. They were fortunate to have family and friends who were willing to help them along the way. That home saw the family through more than 20 years of growth, joy, challenges, and experiences. Tom’s working years were spent in various roles. He took great pride in working with people and building a good rapport with those around him. He often joked about being the tallest elf in the hollow tree during his years as a Keebler salesman. Whether for work or for fun, Tom made many memories on the road with his children and instilled in them a deep appreciation for music. His distinctive whistle will be missed. Tom’s love of sports continued throughout his life. Many of his nights were spent coaching, watching, and cheering whether it was for his favorite sports teams or supporting his loved ones. Tom was always busy fulfilling his job as a father, and a grandfather, and made it a priority to be involved. Tom was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in various capacities throughout the years. Some of his favorite callings were Sunday School Teacher, Temple Preparation Teacher, and serving as a member of the Bishopric. Tom had a great respect for those he worked alongside. He valued serving others and genuinely loved getting to know those around him. In early 2020 Tom and Cindy made the move from Nephi to St. George. They have enjoyed being closer to parts of their family and meeting new friends. Tom was preceded in death by his parents (Bob and Irene), beloved older brother Richard, two sons-inlaw, Wade and Lonnie, and granddaughter, Maria Irene. He is survived by his loving wife, Cindy, and their children: Stephanie, Shalayne (Brad), Jen (Will), Amy (Jay), Amanda (Michael), Molly (Jeremy), Erin (Erick), Jake (Paige), and twenty-two shweeties (grandchildren). The family would like to thank CNS Home Health and Hospice, especially Nora and Toni, for their tender care and compassionate services in his final days. Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Nephi, UT, with military honors provided by the United States Army. Family and friends are invited to share tributes online.
