Edmund James Barlow, “Jim,” our wonderful dad, grandpa, and friend passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, June 9, 2022. We are comforted in the knowledge that he is with his devoted wife of 60 years, who passed just one year and five days before him. We know their happy reunion in heaven is taking place right now. Jim was born on December 11, 1937, in Santa Monica, California. He was the third son of E. Garrett and Evva Burnham Barlow. He spent his youth in Santa Monica, graduating from Santa Monica High School in 1956. He then served a two-year mission to the Hawaiian Islands from 1958-1960. Our dear mother, Joan, waited for him while he served his mission and they were later married on June 17, 1961, in the Los Angeles LDS temple. They finished their schooling together at Brigham Young University and became the wonderful parents to eight children. We were raised in a Gospel-centered, loving, and rowdy home in Simi Valley, California. We had everything and lacked nothing. Dad was an astute provider for his large family, working mainly in the savings and loan/mortgage industry in Los Angeles, and a faithful and loving husband to our mother. Additionally, he served in many leadership and honorable capacities in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, including as stake patriarch for many years. He was privileged to give 722 blessings. It was a deep honor for him to participate in this great responsibility, and he treasured these memories all his life. In 2012, Joan and Jim sold their home in Simi Valley, California, and spent the last ten years of their life in St. George, Utah. We are grateful to the many friends, ward members, doctors and nurses who took such great care in their final years here in this beautiful city. And especially to our dear sister, Amy, who was their full-time caregiver these last few years. We are blessed to have such a sister in our family. Jim is preceded in death by our mother, Joan Christie Barron Barlow, and a daughter, Lorraine. He is survived by his seven children: Janna (Dan) of Kanosh, Utah; Kelley (Trent) of Lehi, Utah; Michael (Elaine) of Allen, Texas; Steven (Jennifer) of McKinney, Texas; Amy (Craig) of St. George, Utah; Jeffrey (Amy) of Overland Park, Kansas; and Diana (Jason) of Tyler, Texas. He will be missed by his 26 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. On a birthday card Dad sent to a grandchild, he wrote: “And remember to love the Lord Jesus with all your heart, might, mind, and strength. If you do, you will never fail.” With broken hearts, we embrace the wisdom and testimony of our faithful Dad who was valiant in his covenants and in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We know his calling and election are made sure through the gift and mission of our Savior Jesus Christ. And through His Atonement, we will be a forever family and enjoy that beautiful reunion someday with our mom and dad and all of our loved ones. Funeral services will be held at the Green Valley ward meetinghouse located at 1282 W. 500 S. Circle in St. George, Utah, on Friday, June 17, 2022 – mom and dad’s 61st wedding anniversary. Services will begin at 10:00 a.m., with a viewing prior to that at 9:00 a.m. Interment will immediately follow at Tonaquint Cemetery in St. George, Utah.
