Lorna Hall Flater

Lorna Hall Flater, 95 passed away in Hurricane, UT, on January 19, 2018. She was born on March 6, 1922, in Hurricane, Utah, she was the third child, and oldest daughter, of Alvin and Ann Pickett Hall. She married Wendel Junior Flater, of Bloomfield, Indiana, in Kanab, UT. They had six children. Lorna didn’t always have the luxury of staying home with the kids. At times she worked in a factory, and when her husband had his own business in Indiana she assisted him with taking orders and making deliveries. Lorna was well-known for her easy rapport with small children. She worked for a time at a day-care center, and taught children during decades at church. After she was widowed, Lorna, accompanied by her youngest son, returned to Hurricane from Indiana to care for her elderly mother. At the Senior Citizen Center, Lorna learned to paint. Until that time she had always believed that she had no artistic talent, but her paintings became prized gifts for her grandchildren, and won several ribbons at the county fair and at “Peach Days.” Lorna was also asked to assist in genealogy work by helping in the “name extraction” program. She reviewed microfiche of centuries-old government and church records. She had to learn old English script to perform this. At first she didn’t think she was capable, but she came to love this work, and continued many years as a volunteer. Lorna also served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Denver, CO, when she was in her 60s. Lorna enjoyed tending flowers, which she continued to do at the rehab center where she lived after her last stroke. Lorna is survived by: her daughters, Lorna Louise Thomas, of Hurricane, and Sherma Pritchard, of Nashville, IN; and by her sons Billy Joe Flater, of the Philippines, Larry David Flater, of Independence, MO, and Ronald Wendel Flater, of Phoenix, AZ; a sister Beverly, and her brothers Roland and Vard, as well as many in-laws, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins, of all whom she was very fond. She was preceded to the eternal realm by her husband, Wendel (“Windy”), and by a son, John Stanley Flater; her parents, her brothers, Wendell and Gerald, and her sisters Alaina (Glenna), Evelyn, and Rhean. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 27, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Hurricane 2nd Ward chapel 155 East 1050 North Hurricane, UT. Visitations will be held Friday evening from 5:00-6:30 p.m., and again on Saturday morning from 9:00-9:40, both at the chapel. Lorna will be laid to rest next to her husband in the Hurricane City Cemetery.
