Megan Larkins Hamblin

June 3, 1941 - April 18, 2022

On April 18, 2022, Megan Larkins Hamblin concluded her life here on this planet, and returned to her heavenly home. Having done all she had been asked to do, her’s is surely a sweet reunion. She was born Edna Chloe Hamblin on 3 June 1941 in Phoenix Arizona, the youngest of three children of Margaret (née Ramage) and Amasa Leavitt Hamblin. At the age of four, she was adopted by her new stepfather Alton Homer Larkins. She attended Weber High School, and Weber State College, receiving an associate's degree in nursing six weeks before her marriage to Warren Rex Wimmer on 8 August 1962. Though she worked almost continuously while her children were being raised, they never felt the effects of her absence. She very deliberately worked third shift while they were growing up so that when they were awake and home she was awake and home. An active and loving mother, she took great delight in the joys and responsibilities of day-to-day living. She championed the different personalities of each of her children and fostered their interests and abilities. She had almost the magical gift of being able to convince children that anything they were doing was their own idea. She loved to learn, and to read. She and her husband both considered it was their responsibility to educate their children both as to things the world, and as to spiritual things. Anything they got from school or from church was considered extra. In 1982, after 20 years of marriage, she parted ways with her husband and with the name that she had disliked her entire life. Her three children spent about two months working with her on the fun problem of naming Mom. In the end, she chose a name that honored all three of her parents; Megan Larkins Hamblin. After 25 years of working as a nurse, she received her bachelor's degree in social work from Weber State College, and then her master's degree in psychotherapy from the University of Utah. She worked as a therapist for ten years before a work related injury necessitated her medical retirement. She enjoyed both careers and looked forward to helping people on a daily basis. She was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed playing for her own pleasure and in church callings and for various other functions. Left to her own devices, at some point during each piano session, she was going to play Clair de Lune. Love of music, rhythm and rhyme was something that she taught to her family, both directly and by example. Pets were important to Mama, and as her children were growing up they had a true menagerie at all times. At various points, there were dogs, cats, gerbils, hermit crabs and chrysalises in a fish tank waiting for spring. More than once, she and her children watched butterflies emerge and take off out of the open patio door once their wings were dried. Her wings are dry now, and she has taken off for another shore, where we are sure she has been welcomed with open arms. But, we, left here on this ground, will miss her. She is survived by her children Teresa Grace Covington, Mary Ann Day and her husband Michael, and her son Mark David Wimmer. In addition she will be missed by her grandchildren:Sarah, Isaac, David, Samuel, Eliza, Natasha, Kathleen, Jillian, Karen, Amanda, David, Annika, Daniel and Adam. She also has eight great grandchildren: Evey, Gunther, Calvin, Ripley, Harold, Toby, Westley and Sylvia. She is further survived by her brother Guy and his wife Sharon, her brother-in-law Don, and her half-sister Mary. Mom also had many dear friends in her life. She will be especially missed by Carol, Cheryl, and Marie. She has been welcomed at home by her Saviour, all three of her parents, her sister Orelene, her half-brother Ron and her dogs Hector and Ivan. The amazing workers of hospice made Mom’s last 3 and 1/2 months possible. She wanted to be in her own home around her own family, and they were there at all times with support, advice and encouragement. Kirk, Tashi, both Nicholes and Ruth were especially supportive. We could not have done it without you. A public memorial will be held on 3 June 2022, her 81st birthday. Time and place will be forthcoming.
