Christine Mann Zeidner

St. George, UT- Christine Mann Zeidner passed away suddenly on December 23, 2015. She was born January 19, 1928 in Woodbine, KS to Christian John and Vaughnie Waynick Mann. She married Robert Farrer Zeidner in Junction City, KS on October 29, 1949. Christine was born and raised in a small town in rural Kansas. A child of the Great Depression, she retained vivid memories of the “Dust Bowl” and its impacts upon her family and the agriculture-based community in which she lived. Always an excellent and dedicated student, she completed high school in 1945 before entering the University of Kansas on an academic scholarship. She excelled in math and the sciences, earning a BA degree in Mathematics in 1949 and making her a standout among contemporaries at a time when young women in Kansas did not commonly pursue four-year degrees in technical fields. Later that year, she met and married Robert Farrer Zeidner, an Army officer and graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. Christine’s marriage to Robert added an exciting dimension to her life as she accompanied him to military stations around the United States and abroad. Those included more than six years living in Turkey and other areas of the Middle East. Though her first 20 years of marriage were dutifully spent as the wife of a career military officer and mother of four children, Christine’s academic drive was undiminished. She earned a Master of Library Science degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1970. Quickly putting her new credential into practice, she began a professional career within the Marriott Library at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. From her start as a part-time librarian, she rose to head the library’s physical sciences and engineering section as a tenured faculty member. Christine retired from the University in 1990. She was rightfully proud of her professional and academic accomplishments, particularly as a woman in what she tended to regard as being “a man’s world”. Christine was an avid traveler. Being retired enabled her and husband Robert to pursue this passion unfettered as they took lengthy trips to exotic locales on five continents. Another of Christine’s passions was a profound love of animals which she passed on to each of her four children. Christine is survived by her husband Robert and sister Mary Ann Womack of Lawrence KS , by her four children: Jan Busey and husband David of Tulsa, OK; Robert Christian Zeidner and wife Jennifer of St. George, UT; Thomas John Zeidner and wife Lydia of Carmichael, CA; and Philip Mann Zeidner of Las Vegas, NV. Surviving grandchildren are Sean Busey, Jillian Zeidner, Iris Zeidner, Roland Zeidner, and one great grandchild, Alexander Busey. Christine was preceded in death by her parents, Christian John and Vaughnie Waynick Mann, as well as by brothers Robert Mann and John Mann. The family would like to thank the staff of The Retreat at Sunbrook in St. George for their care and compassion provided over Christine’s final months and passing. A memorial service is planned for April 30, 2016 at 3:30 PM at Pioneer Ridge Assisted Living, located at 4851 Harvard Road in Lawrence KS.
