Craig Delynn Barrick

Craig Delynn Barrick was born July 1, 1945 in Cedar City, Utah to Oscar Dalton and Dawn Jepson Barrick. He passed away Oct 17, 2023 at the age of 78 after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease at his home in Cedar City, Utah. Craig had an enjoyable childhood, growing up in the small town of Hurricane, Utah. He spent much of his summer days hiking the Hurricane lava flats (Skeleton Hole) with his older brother, Garry, or playing with his sisters, Patricia and Merridee. Craig was always an obedient child and tried very hard not to disappoint his parents, and to make them proud of him. He excelled in academics, received his Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America, and later his Silver Beaver Award for his years of service in the BSA. As a young boy, Craig learned how to work hard. His first job was passing newspapers. Sometimes he would saddle up his horse, Roanie, and trot around the streets throwing papers to many homes in his neighborhood. During High School, Craig spent two summers hauling hay near Elko, Nevada. This helped him condition for the sports he excelled in. His quickness and speed helped him rise to the top in basketball, baseball and football. He was named on the All-State Team in basketball and played baseball at Dixie College his first year there. Craig always had a strong desire to do what is right regardless of the consequences. He developed this strong moral compass through building a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. His love for the gospel of Jesus Christ led him to accept a mission call to the Central States Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the age of 19 (Nebraska, Missouri and Oklahoma) where he taught many people about the gospel of Jesus Christ. After returning home from a 2-year mission, he met a beautiful young lady while attending Dixie College. It didn’t take long for him to fall head over heels for Kathryn Rose Watson. They were married and sealed in the St George Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on May 20, 1967. They have been happily married for 56 years. Craig graduated from Dixie Jr College, then graduated from BYU with a Bachelor Degree in Sociology. Later, he got his Master’s Degree in Business Administration at UNLV on the GI Bill. After BYU, Craig enlisted into the Air Force during the Vietnam War, where he served faithfully for his country for 4 years at Nellis Air Force Base. After his discharge, he worked 30 years for Human Services and Workforce Services for the State of Utah and helped many people. He and his wife enjoyed raising seven wonderful children. Craig’s life revolved around his family. He loved coaching their Little League teams, taking them camping, deer hunting, golfing, being their Scoutmaster and watching their dance reviews and ball games. One thing he loved all his life was sitting around the TV with his kids watching BYU football games. He was a natural at music and played the piano, clarinet, harmonica, guitar and banjo. Because music had such a powerful impact on his life, Craig decided to pass out different instruments to each of his kids and form the “Barrick Bluegrass Band”. Craig was on the Banjo. Craig and his wife enjoyed many years Square Dancing with the Hey Cedars Dance Club. Craig was a great dancer. Craig loved serving the Lord. He taught early-morning Seminary in Las Vegas for 3 years, then as a Scoutmaster for many years, he changed the lives of many young men. He helped teach his kids and the youth around him the importance of doing things because it’s the right thing to do. He was a man of principle with an incredible moral compass and impeccable character. Later, Craig served as a Bishop and made a difference to those whom he served. For many years throughout his life, Family History work and Temple attendance were his passions. He and his wife served in the local Family History Center for nearly 30 years and served a full-time Senior Mission in 2011-2012 at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. Of all his accomplishments and passions, nothing was greater than his love for his Savior Jesus Christ. He loved Him with all his heart. His actions were in line with his desire to follow the Savior's example. Craig will always be remembered as a loving husband, brother, father and grandfather. He was a giant among men. Craig was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Kaitlin Barrick and great granddaughter, Kaylee Lloyd, and his mother and father. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; sons, Stephen (Nadine), and Michael (Amy); his daughter, Angela; sons, Robert (Christy), Brandon (Holly) and Cory; and his daughter, Kristin (Nathan) Kartchner; 28 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; brother, Garry (Vondell) Barrick, and sisters Patricia (Kerry) Gubler and Merridee (Gregg) Gibson. Funeral Services will be held Friday, Oct 20, at 11:00 am with a viewing prior to that from 9:30 to 10:30 at the Greens Lake Chapel at 1120 West Greens Lake Dr., Cedar City, Utah. Kathy and the family would like to convey their deepest appreciation to Cedar Health and Rehabilitation for the friendly and loving help they showed Craig while he was there.
