Dixie Sue Hawley

Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Dixie Sue Hawley, 87, of Buckeye, Arizona passed away peacefully at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, John Robert (Bob) and Janie, in Brookside, Utah, on December 3, 2025, surrounded by family. Daughter of Benjamin Arthur and Ruby Lee Horne O'Barr, Dixie was born in Mesa, Arizona on February 4, 1938 and spent her childhood in Mesa, surrounded by her six siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins. She later graduated from Mesa High School, where she enjoyed being a “Rabbette” baton twirler. Dixie lived most of her life in Buckeye, Arizona where she raised her four children and a foster son. A life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dixie served in various callings during her life, including Relief Society leadership and Cub Scout Den Mother. Dixie managed the Bookstore at Buckeye Union High School for many years where she was loved by faculty and students. Dixie was married in 1957 to (former Buckeye Mayor) John Burton Hawley, (deceased). They divorced after 35 years. In later years, Dixie devoted her home and loving care to helping raise many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dixie is survived by her brother Danny (Gretchen) O’Barr of Wasilla, Alaska, and sister Dianna (Stuart) Quist of Mesa, Arizona, sons Bob (Janie) Hawley, Brookside, Utah, David (Kate) Hawley, Eager, Arizona and Jim (Cheryl) Hawley of Waddell, Arizona, as well as 19 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She leaves a legacy of faith, love and selfless service to her family. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Ruby O’Barr, daughter Cynthia Louise Boone, and brothers, Joe (Mickey) O’Barr, Donald (Wylene) O’Barr, and sisters, Jeana (Darrell) Smith, and June (Bill) Starks. Memorial Services for Dixie will be held on Saturday, January 31st at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, located at 25800 W. Southern Ave, Buckeye, AZ 85326. Visitation will be held from 9 am to 9:45 a.m. Inurnment/Graveside Service to follow at 2:30 p.m. in the Serenity Gardens Crematory, located in the Mesa City Cemetery, 1212 N Center St, Mesa, Arizona, where Dixie has five generations of family preceding her. The family would like to thank the amazing staff of Integrated Home Health /Hospice, for their loving and exemplary care of Dixie in the final weeks of her life, as well as Serenity Funeral Home, for their caring service.
