Joyce Hunt Hughes

Joyce Hunt Hughes passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at the age of 88. Born February 5, 1928, in St. George, Utah to Max Elias and Beulah Anderson Hunt, she married her sweetheart, Fent Austin Hughes, in the Manti Temple on October 22, 1945. Joyce was a pioneer in heart and soul. She loved nature, especially the desert scenes of southern Utah and the mountains of Utah and Idaho. She was an excellent homemaker, seamstress, and teacher. A master gardener, she enjoyed propagating and grafting. She was blessed with the spirit of innovation and always loved a project. Having grown up during the years of the Great Depression, she was never one to throw away anything that could be reused and made over. Joyce spent most of her happy and productive years living in Ivins and Centerville Utah. Joyce happily dedicated over fifty years to mentoring and serving in the scouting program. She treasured the opportunity to teach hiking, camping, and life skills to hundreds of 11-year-old scouts. She received many awards for her service, including the Silver Beaver Award in 1982. She received her Registered Nursing degree from Brigham Young University. Joyce was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and deeply loved the Gospel. She served in many capacities throughout her life, especially enjoying any opportunity to attend the temple. Together with Fent, she served three missions for the LDS church, two of them to Native Americans and one in the Family History Center in Salt Lake City. Joyce and Fent had six children: Amber (Clyde Davis) Beryl, UT; Catherine (George March) Hurricane, UT; Terri (Mike Austin) Clearfield, UT; Brenda (2013); Stewart (Bonita) Orem, UT; Grace (Doug Trump) Farmington, UT. She was preceded in death by: her husband Fent; her parents; her brothers: Jay, Andrew (Dee), and Gary; her sister Colleen; and her dear daughter Brenda. She is survived by: her older sister Cleo; her twin sister Joy; her younger sisters Carmen, Anna, RaeDean, Bonnie, and Susan; and by five of her children, 21 grandchildren, and 51 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Boy Scouts of America. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday June 28, at 10:30 a.m. at 3815 Rachel Dr., Santa Clara, UT.
