Robert Jefferson Shoemaker

They are having a reunion in heaven and serving peaches at Robert Jefferson Shoemaker’s return. Robert passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving children on August 28, 2024, at the age of 83. Robert was born on January 18,1941 to Lyle Robert Shoemaker and Lola Loraine Ward in Cavite, Philippines. He was always proud to say he was born in the Philippines as he was so very proud of his Navy family background. He married Joan Frances Holmes on August 20,1966 in Bonita, California. They were sealed for time and all eternity on October 19, 1968 in the Los Angeles Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The most important thing to Robert during his lifetime was his family. He is survived by his four children: Joseph Arthur (Kimberly) Shoemaker, Daniel Jefferson (Suzanne) Shoemaker, Tamara Lynn Barnard, and Andrew Jefferson (Jessica) Shoemaker, 2 brothers (Byron and Patrick DeSerisy), 8 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. After serving in the US Army, he became an apprentice and eventually worked his way up through journeyman to become a foreman as a sheet metal mechanic and worked for 25 years in the sheet metal industry. He worked at the San Onofre Power plant as part of that career. Once he retired he worked laying carpet for many years and then as a Custodian at Loma Elementary where he was affectionately known as “Mr. Bob”. He was a regular handyman being very talented with his hands and could fix so many things. Robert joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on August 5,1967. He was an active member the remainder of his life and served in many different callings. He influenced many young men’s lives in his service as a Scoutmaster for over 18 years. He also loved working side by side with Joan with the Cub Scouts for many years and their empty nesters group. He served as a church service missionary at the Brigham Young Home, the Jacob Hamlin home, and recently as a Family Search Center Missionary for many of the last several years. In retirement Robert and Joan moved from San Diego to Hurricane, Utah where he enjoyed visiting national parks, gardening classes, fishing, ATV club, golfing and working at the Sky Mountain golf club. Most of all he loved when family came to visit and he could take them and show them all the exciting places he had discovered in Southern Utah while giving them a history lesson. At the passing of his beloved wife Joan in 2015, he later married Connie Fox. He was preceded in death by both Joan and Connie, by his parents and siblings (John Shoemaker and Lyola Greene). A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, September 3 at 10 am at the Hurricane City Cemetery 225 E 600 N in Hurricane, Utah. Interment will be in the Hurricane City Cemetery.
